Inheritance Tax in a nutshell

In the UK, inheritance tax is a levy imposed on the estate (the property, money, and possessions) of someone who has died. The tax is calculated on the value of the estate above a certain threshold, which is known as the inheritance tax threshold or nil-rate band.

As of today, the threashold is £325,000. However, there are various exemptions and reliefs available, such as those for gifts made during a person’s lifetime or to a spouse or charity. Inheritance tax rates can be as high as 40% on the value of the estate above the threshold. It’s a significant consideration for estate planning and often requires professional advice to navigate effectively.
